SUMMARY:AI-driven Images in Radiation Therapy
DESCRIPTION:{title}\nSpeaker: David J Gilmore{start_date} at {start_time} -{end_time}{venue:name} \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n AI-driven Images in Radiation Therapy – for Usability & User Experience Feb. 6\, 2019\n \n \n David J Gilmore\, PhD\, Elekta \nNew products for treating cancer with radiation therapy can provide therapists with high quality MR images in real-time\, which can enable them to detect patient and tumor movements. This\, in turn\, creates the potential for much more precise and effective treatments for cancer.However\, this creates tasks for the therapist that they are not used to (monitoring MR images for movement of the tumor or of critical organs). \nEnsuring that the new\, better technology is as safe and effective as the old technologies is the first challenge. The second challenge is deploying artificial intelligence – in the form of image processing – to detect these movements both automatically and much more precisely\, whilst not interfering with the therapists ability to do their job. It seems obvious that the end result should be better for the user and for the patient\, but demonstrating this and delivering on usability and user experience is non-trivial. \nAbout the Speaker \nDavid has over 30 years experience studying usability and user experience at the intersection of hardware and software\, with 20+ experience using this expertise to develop real products. As well as Elekta’s Unity MR-Linac (discussed in this presentation) David was also the user experience lead for Logitech / Ultimate Ear’s Boom range of bluetooth speakers\, and for GE Power’s ActivePoint HMI system for gas-fired power plants. Further back in time he also worked at Intel\, IDEO and Apple\, as well as teaching human factors and HCI at the University of Nottingham. \nPlease note: CHIFOO wants to make sure that each meeting is a great experience for everyone. SUMMARY:Designing the Internet of Everybody
DESCRIPTION:{title}\nSpeaker: Ali Colleen Neff{start_date} at {start_time} -{end_time}{venue:name} \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n Smart Cities Design Thinking and New Technologies that Seek to Address the Wicked Problems of Everyday Life April 3\, 2019\n \n \n Ann Marcus\, Marcus Consulting Group \nIn the early days of technology\, humans molded themselves to technology and went where it resided. Now tech is coming to us in nearly everything we own and do. It’s learning how to mold to and around us individually and as part of communities and gather data at every turn. Is that a good thing? Yes. And No. We’ll look at the phenomenon of Smart Cities\, how they are defined\, why they’re arising and how they serve as a framework for understanding how our daily lives are (overtly and insidiously) being changed in ways we never imagined. As citizens and design thinkers what role do/should we play in how the latest smart cities technologies–sensors\, cameras\, platforms\, aggregation and analytics algorithms\, machine learning and artificial intelligence–transform how we live\, work\, play\, learn\, love\, see\, move\, engage and understand our world–and how it understands us? I’ll tell you what I know and then let’s discuss! \nAbout the Speaker \nAnn Marcus is an accomplished strategist who has conducted research\, content development and communications consulting–for organizations ranging from start-ups to enterprise–on the challenges and opportunities at intersection of people and technology. Ann was with Cisco Systems for the past 11 years\, where she was initially recruited to help develop an interactive learning and collaboration site for the Cisco Certification community. She stayed on for 5 years providing information architecture\, UX design\, content development and community management services. In 2013\, Ann joined the Cisco Smart+Connected Communities team–initially having developed a similar interactive site–but later moved into the role of executive communications lead and engagements manager for the organization’s senior VP. She left Cisco at the end of 2018 to explore new opportunities and undertake social/community development and projects in Portland\, across the US and overseas. Ann sits on the leadership team for the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Global City Team Challenge (GCTC) Education Supercluster and participates in the Transportation Supercluster centered here in Portland. Ann does yoga and Zumba\, has annoying cats\, loves to travel\, speaks Spanish and has been a member of CHIFOO for a really long time! \nPlease note: CHIFOO wants to make sure that each meeting is a great experience for everyone. DESCRIPTION:{title}\nSpeaker: Ann Marcus \n{start_date} at {start_time} -{end_time}\n{venue:name}\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n Researching Smart + Spatial Computing May 1\, 2019\n \n \n Hannah Scurfield\, UX Design Research and Strategy for Spatial Computing\, eBay \nUnderstanding how humans will react and engage with new and emerging platforms can be challenging\, particularly with smart and spatial computing. These types of experiences often depart from existing mental models of human-machine interaction and are often tricky to prototype. Traditional behavioral research methods often become less effective\, meaning researchers need to experiment with new ways to gather learning. \nUsing examples from research into mixed and augmented reality experiences\, we will explore these hurdles and discuss techniques for gathering insights when existing research methods prove inadequate. \nJoin this session to hear about experimenting with user experience design research techniques and how people interact with augmented and mixed reality experiences. \nAbout the Speaker\nHannah drives technology innovation by researching people\, behaviors and culture. She works with design\, development\, product and business teams to help build products and experiences that people love. She has nearly 18 years’ experience in both research and design roles in the technology industry and an exciting 14 years spent working in the innovation labs of global technology leaders. \nHer career has been focused on emerging platforms\, from early mobile computing and the Internet of things to augmented and virtual reality experiences. A background in film\, human-computer interaction and ergonomics prepared Hannah for experimenting with smart and spatial computing and her current passion: reimagining the traditional screen-based design research studio. \nHannah likes blank sheets of paper and big questions with no answers. \n\nPlease note: CHIFOO wants to make sure that each meeting is a great experience for everyone. Automation and autonomy remain our inevitable fail safe solutions\, but without robust methods to explore\, validate\, and prioritize our technological pathway to a fully-autonomous future\, people will find it increasingly more difficult to drive cars. Let’s explore how user experience designers can enhance vehicle development by bringing human-centered methods to the complex process of designing the mobility solutions of tomorrow. \nAbout the Speaker \nA one-time CHIFOO Board member\, Emily Bowman is a Design Group Manager at General Motors where she leads user experience innovation and a team of product designers crafting the future interfaces for electric and autonomous vehicles. Throughout her design career\, she has leveraged user-centered methodologies to help global brands like Jaguar Land Rover\, Kimberly-Clark\, Ford\, and Intel create useful and usable experiences through cars\, phones\, wearables\, and the web. Whenever she’s not at GM\, Emily is an active volunteer in the Michigan UX community. \nPlease note: CHIFOO wants to make sure that each meeting is a great experience for everyone. SUMMARY:2020 Speaker SeriesUsing UX For Good: Building A Better World
DESCRIPTION:2020 Speaker SeriesUsing UX For Good: Building A Better World \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The world’s a mess. The number of problems we face and the technology involved\, grows exponentially from year to year. Yet our job is to make it all work. From a UX design perspective\, addressing these issues can seem like a game of “Whack a Mole\,” where new issues pop up as soon as one is solved. It doesn’t have to be that way. What if we tried a proactive approach to encourage the right choices? We could build the pathways that allow other positive actions to take place. Through this strategy we create foundations for future growth that will have a positive effect on not just the tech systems we use but the world around us. \nThis year’s series\,“Using UX for Good: Building a Better World”\, will explore practical ways we can do this through the voices of visionary thinkers and designers who have already planted the seeds for growth. These innovative approaches to change can inspire us to take action while we expand the potential of our daily work. With this Speaker Series we celebrate the change-makers among us and look to them for inspiration as we solve the problems we face and create pathways that will expand\, rather than contract\, our future.

Where we succeed with the big ‘I’ of Interaction\, we often fail at helping people understand what we expect from the little ‘i’ of interacting. Now\, a small lighthouse has appeared to guide users through the immediate and often emotional journeys they take through their day—UX Writing. Also known as ‘Microcopy’\, UX Writing has emerged as the fine-toothed comb of UX\, balancing the serving the immediate ‘lever and pulley’ needs of keeping people going through their daily journey while also giving people important contextual and emotional clues. In this talk\, we will walk through how UX Writing & Microcopy can (and will) transform writing within business organizations\, trades and arts work\, and application design to reduce stress and provide guidance for all people from every walk of life. This talk is all-levels and presumes some knowledge of graphic design\, copywriting\, and user interface design. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n{title}\nSpeaker: Skyler Reed \n{start_date} at {start_time} -{end_time}{venue:name} \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n 2019 Speaker Series: Smart Stuff\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Smart Stuff\n Alternative Interfaces\, Artificial Intelligence & Augmented Interactions\n This year we explore the opportunities and challenges alternative interfaces\, artificial intelligence\, and augmented interactions bring to our futures. \n Learn MoreSee Events\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n AI seems to be everywhere. At the Center for Civic Design\, Dana Chisnell and her team collected thousands of stories from U.S. voters over five years. The stories revealed two massive gaps in the process. \nFirst\, people who administer elections and voters have very different mental models of the process of voting. The second gap was between privileged voters and burdened voters. These gaps explained why it’s harder than it should be to vote in the U.S. and showed that policies meant to make things better had unintended consequences that actually make it worse. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n{title}\nSpeaker: Dana Chisnell \n{start_date} at {start_time} -{end_time}{venue:name} \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n 2019 Speaker Series: Smart Stuff\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Smart Stuff\n Alternative Interfaces\, Artificial Intelligence & Augmented Interactions\n This year we explore the opportunities and challenges alternative interfaces\, artificial intelligence\, and augmented interactions bring to our futures. \n Learn MoreSee Events\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n AI seems to be everywhere. After 20 years of the Web disintermediating “middle men\,” Facebook\, Amazon\, Tencent\, Google\, Baidu\, etc. are now implementing conversational interface platforms that will reintermediate everything and everyone. This spells economic disaster for anyone without the financial or technical resources to build their own conversational interfaces to services of all types. UX developers of all kinds bridge the distance between our clients/companies and our customers and we can have as big an impact on strategy as anyone else in the company. In fact\, we may be the only ones in a position to save our companies and clients from their impending doom. \n \nThere is a video of this event. SUMMARY:August Social Zoom Trivia Night
DESCRIPTION:Usually we’d be bowling or gaming or indulging in some group social event. Unfortunately\, Covid is preventing us from getting together in person this year. But we’ve heard your feedback about not having any face time on our meetings. This will be a chance to hang out with your CHIFOO buddies online. Grab yourself a festive beverage and settle in for a hour or two of online fun. \nWe’ll be using breakout rooms with starter topics to provide small group conversations\, and gathering back together for several sessions of online UX focused Trivia contests via the Kahoot app\, led by our Vicefoo and resident Game Master\, Robert LaCosse! \n

Or yesterday. Likely both. Maybe that password you use for everything made its way to the dark web. Perhaps your personal data was leaked when a major retailer got hacked. Could be you’ve noticed something weird in your history on your favorite streaming service. \nOur data is constantly at risk of being exposed and sometimes it feels like you have to become a security expert just to protect yourself. But there is some good news. As more companies start to recognize authentication as a design problem the user experience of logging in to your favorite app or service is steadily improving. Come learn about password alternatives\, two factor authentication\, and biometric authentication\, and leave with few simple steps you can take to make your data more secure. Is my home spying on me? It’s all very confusing. This year CHIFOO explores the opportunities and challenges alternative interfaces\, artificial intelligence and augmented interactions bring to our futures. We will take a deep dive into how smart devices\, cars\, and homes are changing our culture and even us\, while exploring the interactions this new tech makes possible. The possibilities are exciting\, inspiring\, and at times unexpected. As professionals dealing with communication\, interaction\, and results we are at the center of this vortex of change\, given the charge to provide solid solutions for an uncertain world. We are empowered by these new tools yet challenged by them as well. As the ones responsible for using it all\, we must get up to speed on it all quickly. \nThis speaker series will explore the various ways these themes are playing out in our lives now while determining the potential for the future by examining specific applications of each. By understanding more about what the potential of how to best use the tools\, we can provide better solutions in our own work\, and create a more friendly world. Please join us for this exciting series. \nPlease note: CHIFOO wants to make sure that each meeting is a great experience for everyone. DESCRIPTION:2021 Speaker SeriesResilience: Building Online Experiences to Adapt and Thrive \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n As we stumble uncertainly towards a new reality marked by viral\, political\, and cultural changes\, it becomes obvious that our future success depends on our being flexible and adaptable. Psychologists and physicists tell us resilience is the ability to bounce back or adapt after times of trauma or stress. It’s a process by which strength is built through learning from past experiences. \nOn the job\, we have had to adapt to new work flows and communication tools\, which have shaped how we work with colleagues and clients\, gather data\, shape our daily schedules\, and relate to the people we live with. How these shifts have affected those using the products of our work is yet to be fully understood. It’s a process unfolding in front of us\, a process we must learn from. Will we be able to bounce back to our former lives? Do we even want to? How will that affect our work\, workplaces\, clients\, online interactions\, and businesses? And how can we make our new world better? \nAs we enter the next decade\, CHIFOO will explore the forces that are shaping our current situation with hopes to see the potential for growth for ourselves and our industry\, opportunities to help our planet and it’s people heal\, and ways to make our online interactions more equitable\, more useful\, more helpful\, and more kind.

This seemed to give rise to a certain degree of curiosity. Hence I promised to come back and explain. So this talk is my fulfillment of that promise. \nSo what I am going to do is take you on a guided tour of the history of (largely) 3D viewers and the ability to experience remote places without being there. The stepping stones of my narrative will items selected out of the Buxton – Microsoft collection\, spanning the period between 1838 and now. And\, yes\, Portland will provide an important stepping stone along the path followed. As interesting as this tour may be intrinsically\, it has to have a secondary theme which extends beyond the specific tale and its protagonists. In this case\, that uber-tale has to do with the nature of design\, technical evolution\, the cultural nature of what we do\, and perhaps even the difference between technology evolution (a scientific notion) vs progress (an ethical one). \nAnd hopefully – to the extent possible being remote\, we can make this as much a conversation as a presentation. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n {title}\nSpeaker: Bill Buxton{start_date} at {start_time} -{end_time}{venue:name} \n \n \n \n \n \n Somehow\, during my CHIFOO talk last year\, I mentioned how important Portland was to the evolution of AR/VR technology and adoption. She believes you can answer any question as long as you are fearless and creative about methods. She was the VP of Research for SF-based remote research firm Bolt | Peters until June 2012\, when Facebook acquired the company. Since 2012\, working with the Center for Civic Design\, Code for America\, and 18F\, as well as independently\, Cyd has helped multiple executive- and judicial-branch agencies in the US apply research techniques and user-centered practice to serving the public. When not at the office helping public servants use design for good\, Cyd is a mentor for mid-senior UX practitioners. Her favorite tools are metaphor and (metaphorical) duct tape.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n {title}\nSpeaker: Cyd Harrell{start_date} at {start_time} -{end_time}{venue:name} \n \n \n \n \n \n The remote research that’s our best method during a global pandemic can seem restrictive\, but never fear. Cyd will show you how to get all the depth of qualitative research methods while keeping yourself and your users safe. She’ll talk through what’s harder\, what’s easier\, and what’s just different\, from recruiting to interviews to diary studies. Conducting meaningful research that respects participants’ time and agency is even more important as our society adapts to cope with this crisis\, and it takes just a little more study design work to keep participants comfortable and engaged in a remote session. Cyd will share her best conversational and technical tips from 14 years of remote research practice\, and talk about ways to handle mobile interfaces\, difficult topics\, internet outages\, and more. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n {title}\nSpeaker: Cyd Harrell{start_date} at {start_time} -{end_time}{venue:name} \n \n \n \n \n \n The remote research that’s our best method during a global pandemic can seem restrictive\, but never fear.
