About the Speaker

Cyd Harrell,
Cyd is well known in industry and government for her creative approach to UX research and service design. She believes you can answer any question as long as you are fearless and creative about methods. She was the VP of Research for SF-based remote research firm Bolt | Peters until June 2012, when Facebook acquired the company. Since 2012, working with the Center for Civic Design, Code for America, and 18F, as well as independently, Cyd has helped multiple executive- and judicial-branch agencies in the US apply research techniques and user-centered practice to serving the public. When not at the office helping public servants use design for good, Cyd is a mentor for mid-senior UX practitioners. Her favorite tools are metaphor and (metaphorical) duct tape.

The remote research that’s our best method during a global pandemic can seem restrictive, but never fear. Cyd will show you how to get all the depth of qualitative research methods while keeping yourself and your users safe. She’ll talk through what’s harder, what’s easier, and what’s just different, from recruiting to interviews to diary studies. Conducting meaningful research that respects participants’ time and agency is even more important as our society adapts to cope with this crisis, and it takes just a little more study design work to keep participants comfortable and engaged in a remote session. Cyd will share her best conversational and technical tips from 14 years of remote research practice, and talk about ways to handle mobile interfaces, difficult topics, internet outages, and more.
