For some, “Keep Portland Weird” is more than a bumper sticker. It’s a mandate, a clarion call, akin to the forces that guided many of us to the design community. It’s a directive to diverge from the mainstream and overcome functional fixedness. It also thrives on some of the same principles that guide design. Hear a series of short stories about the Whackadoos, a local band of merry pranksters who deeply valued creative chaos, understood their role in making it happen, and produced it lovingly for many years.
In this talk, you will:
- Explore fundamental design tenets through the work of local creatives
- Recognize the ways that personal and professional creativity overlap and inform each other
- Challenge yourself to consider how these efforts connect to your own design practices, and hopefully walk away inspired to provoke, intrigue, and generate your own creative chaos
About Melissa Casburn,
Melissa Casburn has been part of Portland’s creative class for 20 years, including stints with local agencies and software companies as well as the regional Burning Man community. In 2005 she co-founded SOAK, the Portland Regional Burn, and produced the event for 5 years. She holds a BA in Clothing & Textile Design and an MBA, and is currently pursuing a certificate in Surface Design. Melissa currently serves as the VP of Design for Coforma, a DC-based digital agency that crafts creative solutions and technology products that improve American communities.
